Thus, the effective debridement of the infected root canal system, combined with incision for drainage and occlusal reduction if indicated, provides predictable pain reduction strategies in endodontic emergency patients. Antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used in the management of endodontic pain. NSAIDs reduce pain and inflammation by inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins. Pain perception can be mild, moderate, severe or throbbing, depending on patient pain threshold. It is impossible to quantify pain, and hence various scales have been introduced to measure the intensity of pain. To name a few, Wong-Baker Faces pain scale, Visual Analogue scale, McGill Pain Questionnaire, Descriptor Differential scale, Numerical 11 point box (BS-11), Numeric Rating scale (NRS-11), Dolorimeter Pain Index, Brief Pain Inventory, WalidRobinson Pain Index and Verbal Rating scale.
